Following the trail of the “Wörtherseemandl”
Wednesday, 24 November 2010
No doubt most people think of lake Wörthersee as THE place to enjoy swimming, golfing and going out at night. But there is more! Many wonderful walking trails start at and lead to Carinthia’s “largest bathtub”. Experience this other side of lake Wörthersee far from the hustle and bustle of tourist life and visit the quieter and not so well known destinations of our region. A pleasant stroll along the banks of the lake will lead you to tranquil spots all around lake Wörthersee. Enjoy the home-made delicacies when visiting farmers in the lake Wörthersee region and get to know the customs and experience the daily life of the Carinthian people.
Our special recommendation: Follow the trail of the “Wörtherseemandel” and take the 55 km-long hike leading around the lake. Linger at beautiful resting places like the “Barfußweg” (“barefootpath”) in Pörtschach, the water playground in Velden or the so-called “Glühwürmchenbaum” (“firefly tree”) in Klagenfurt and learn interesting and new things about country and people from the manifold info boards all along the circular route. Along the lake Wörthersee hiking trail you will find 10 spots where you can collect stamps. A map for this peculiar hiking trail is available for free in all tourist offices in the lake Wörthersee region as well as in the office of the Wörthersee Tourismus GmbH.
